Solaris Administration: Beginner's Guides

The purpose of this page is to provide support information for the series of Solaris Administration: Beginner's Guide trade books written by Dr. Paul A. Watters.

This series of books was designed with two audiences in mind - sysadmins who were familiar with Windows NT/2000/2003 environments, and Linux sysadmins. The idea was to use a set of blueprints at the core of each book to show a quick and easy pathway to translate existing skills onto new and unfamiliar technologies. Also, since each operating system has its own quirks and implicit philosophy and methodologies, so each chapter attempts to provide a "frame" for sysadmins to quickly understand individual technologies and why they are used. There are usually several examples showing typical cookbook methods for getting up-and-running.

The first book - Solaris Administration: A Beginner's Guide - was designed around Solaris 8, while the later volume - Solaris 9 Administration: A Beginner's Guide - provided an update around the Solaris 9 release. However, both books can be read as introductions to Solaris 10 and the OpenSolaris products, with the caveat that some key procedures - such as initialisation - have now changed.
